What is EMDR?

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based psychotherapy developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro in 1987. It helps people process traumatic memories and reduce emotional distress through bilateral stimulation — rhythmic left-right movements that engage both sides of the brain.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends EMDR as a first-line treatment for PTSD. Over 30 randomized controlled trials demonstrate its effectiveness for trauma, anxiety, phobias, and grief. Unlike traditional talk therapy, EMDR works directly with how the brain stores and processes memories.

Our online EMDR tools bring key elements of this powerful method to your screen. While not a replacement for professional therapy, they provide guided bilateral stimulation, psychoeducation, and structured protocols that can support your healing journey.

How EMDR Works: The 8-Phase Protocol

EMDR follows a structured 8-phase approach developed by Dr. Francine Shapiro. Each phase builds on the previous one to ensure safe and effective processing.

  1. 1

    History & Treatment Planning

Your therapist gathers information about your history and identifies target memories for processing. Together, you create a treatment plan tailored to your needs.

  2. 2

    Preparation

You learn coping techniques and grounding exercises. Your therapist explains the EMDR process and establishes a 'safe place' you can return to during sessions.

  3. 3

    Assessment

You identify the target memory, a negative belief associated with it, and the positive belief you'd like to replace it with. You rate the disturbance level (SUD scale).

  4. 4

    Desensitization

While focusing on the target memory, you follow bilateral stimulation (eye movements, taps, or sounds). This helps your brain reprocess the memory, reducing its emotional charge.

  5. 5

    Installation

The positive belief is strengthened and 'installed' to replace the negative one. You rate how true the positive belief feels until it reaches a strong level of conviction.

  6. 6

    Body Scan

You scan your body for any remaining tension or discomfort related to the target memory. Any residual physical sensations are processed with additional bilateral stimulation.

  7. 7

    Closure

Each session ends with stabilization techniques to ensure you leave feeling grounded and safe. Your therapist may guide you through the safe place exercise.

  8. 8

    Reevaluation

At the start of the next session, you review progress and check if previously processed memories still cause distress. New targets are identified if needed.
